LAGUNA BEACH – John McConnell, founder of Earth Day, will visit Laguna Beach for a series of environmental and educational events, set for March 20 and 21.

Among the highlights of his visit, McConnell, 91, will present a proclamation declaring Laguna Beach an “Earth Trustee City” at the beginning of the City Council meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday at City Hall, 505 Forest Avenue. A public gathering at Main Beach will precede his announcement at 4:45 p.m. and will mark the official Vernal Equinox, said Charles Michael Murray, founder of the Endangered Planet Gallery and Foundation, helping organize the events.

“He needs to be honored,” he said. “People need to go back to the roots of the earth, and he’s very significant. He’s giving us the opportunity to keep Earth Day alive.”

Following the ceremony, a panel of experts will define and discuss the goals of Laguna Beach as an Earth Trustee City. The panel is at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 21 in the Festival of Arts Forum Theatre. McConnell will speak with such individuals as Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the United States of America Joanne Tawdills, Environmental Committee member Greg O’Loughlin and more.

“They’ll establish what it means to be an Earth Trustee City,” he said. “It’s for the children – we’re passing the baton back to them.”
